So, last week, I bought this direct video-to-digital recorder.

You just hook up the small, rechargeable-battery-powered, handheld unit to a VCR with RCA cables and it records directly onto a microSD card or a USB thumb drive that you install into the unit, and it creates an .MP4 file.

It works pretty well, but it also seems to not recognize the copy-guarding on VHS tapes!

So, I experimented with a couple of purchased VHS tapes that have not been released on DVD, and it easily made digital files of my purchased VHS tapes!

So, it should work with others as well...assuming that the VHS tapes aren't corrupted.

Today we visited the observatories at Haleakalā, up at 10,000 feet. Our faculty lecturer on this tour did research both here and at Mauna Kea, which we'll see later in the trip.

Our bus driver was bragging to his colleagues about taking us up to the telescopes, which doesn't happen often since they're closed to the public.
