Well, you've read the notes, the notes had applause, and now it is time for you to post until the applauding cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PREROGATIVE!

Congrats, BK, on being able to finally put on Applause!
-
And it's a great poster!
-
Congratulations on the Applause announcement!
-
I have many thoughts on Merrily but will have to wait until later. I adored the Broadway revival. I haven't seen the video so I don't know how well it comes across there.
-
Good night all.
-
Always enjoy back and forths on this here site regarding differing opinions. Mine are mostly about the show itself, and with the choice to do this video as if it were a movie, but still keeping the crazy audience reactions. Do it or don't do it - but it's like one of those MET opera things directed by that awful person who never gives you geography. I don't need a ton of wide shots, I just need to know the geography of the stage and it is nice to see the staging occasionally.
-
Good morning to all
-
BK check the second line in your notes. You have 1970. Unless we are in a time warp and it’s 1975😜😁
-
I saw the 4th performance, preview, a Saturday matinee because tickets were cheaper back then. I saw the original Frank before he was fired and before the older Frank was added. Loved the score, book less so. There was one bit in the first scene, where Gussie pushes her rival into the pool which was made of blue construction paper. The audience unintentionally laughed at the ludicrously how faked it looked. She breaks through the paper, climbs out, and pretends to be wet.
-
Fixed. I had the Applause year in my brain.
-
BK, I know they tried a revised book version some years back with Stefanie Powers. Are you using that one or the original?
-
From yesterday Ann Talman was mentioned yesterday. I met her last fall when she was performing her show nearby. I had her autograph my Playbill and souvenir program.
-
The original.
-
Congratulations, BK, on the upcoming production of APPLAUSE!
-
This was my thought on what was going on with George Furth as a writer right at the time of MERRILY.
One thing that stays in memory as "Merrily We Roll Along" kept getting revised: George Furth hadn't had a Broadway show in several years and then suddenly there on Broadway were his TV-star-filled comedy "The Supporting Cast," and then "Merrily" starting previews just a month after the play opened. I thought from seeing "The Supporting Cast" that the total quick failure of George Furth's play was not predictable - even during previews. (I had a really good time, and I guess it was indeed a sitcom-type play onstage - but it was a very funny example of the genre.)
But how can that failure not have affected anyone - "Merrily" was almost in rehearsals, so the play's failure had to affect not only self-confidence but even how others approached him. No agent keeping track would want scheduling things bunched together intentionally - but when offered, who could turn either down? (At least it didn't stop Furth and Sondheim wanting to collaborate, unlike Sondheim and Prince.)
-
Congrats to MR BK & Co on APPLAUSE.
-
I purchased the original BC Cd some years after it was recorded and enjoyed it very much.....I have never seen the show or read it....but it seems to suffer a lot of slings and arrows because of THE BOOK.
-
Hmmmm.....now that I think about it, the CD I have may be a later version.
-
Season Four of JUDY JUSTICE is now available on Free Prime.
I watched four episodes last night.
People are crazy.
-
Michelle - the NP that did my ZOOM health visit was most amusing.
She would ask questions and I would answer with relish, so to speak.
She then asked: "Have you ever had thoughts of suicide?"
I said: "No."
There was a pause and then she asked: "What about homicide?"
I said: "You've got me there."
Then we both left.
I had answers for everything except my blood pressure....that I did not know.

Monday.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Monday.
-
As DR Jrand75 just noted.
Not a regular old Monday. Just a slightly different one.
-
Clap clap clap on the APPLAUSE announcement!
(See what I did there??? Get it???)
-
With the posting going slowly so far today, maybe this is worth repeating:
A friend who worked the box office at North Shore insisted that when APPLAUSE was playing there, they had many calls asking for tickets to Dorothy Collins in APPLESAUCE.
-
What is it that we're living for?
Applesauce! Applesauce!
-
(big finish)
You've had a taste of
The food that says love
Applesauce! Applesauce!
Applesauce! Applesuace!
Applesauce!!!!!!
-
Well, at least that got us to page 2!
-
Good morning, all.
-
Had a nice night’s sleep.
-
Dorothy Collins in Applesauce sounds like a recipe.
-
In the land of opera, a bad book doesn’t seem to matter. Il Trovatore springs to mind. In the last two seasons, we’ve had several musicals reassessed. Great score, bad book. For audiences, the impact of Merrily happened despite the book. Chess had yet another new book, but audiences don’t mind much because of the score. Some critics loved Love Life, some hated it because of the book. Yet the score sang for its supper.
-
Good morning.

We just got back from the lab for retests on our blood. We both failed at our regular checkups a few months ago. Me for bad cholesterol and him for A1C.
-
Great news on Applause.
-
And your test results, Laura?
-
We'll probably hear this afternoon.
-
Also, it's supposed to rain tonight. I've heard that before. I think the last good rain we had was in November. I don't think amounts like .01 count, because it doesn't really soak into the ground.

DR George, you are welcome x two.
-
George, thanks for the congrats to Keith.
-
From George,
There were almost 500 tickets sold, which they said was the highest attendance in the 26-year history of the silent film series at the Washington Center!
Wow.
-
From MichaelG,
We missed the fountaining at the volcano by one day! If you're reading this soon after I've posted, here's the webcam link. These normally last just a few hours.
https://www.youtube.com/live/tk0tfYDxrUA?si=cOIFwUh7CowAB8Y0
Darn! While not fountaining, it still looks cool in the link.
-
Now that I have caught up with the posts I will read the notes.

Ditto.

Bruce, congratulations on APPLAUSE!

Had food from Birds - first time delivery - pretty good, but the onion rings simply do not travel well.
-
Besides the rings, one chicken breast.

I've always loved Merrily. I got to see a 1983 college production of the original that was very well done. In 2007 a local professional company did one of the revised versions. Then I saw the Broadway revival. I was literally crying at points during the show because ai never dreamed I would see it done so well.
-
For recordings I have the OBC, bk's York recording, and the Broadway revival. The Broadway revival is far and away my favorite.
-
I never had a problem with the book. By the time I saw it on stage, the Betrayal movie had come out with the same story-in-reverse structure. Audiences who've seen movies like Pulp Fiction shouldn't have problems with Merrily's timeline.
-
Which leaves us with the relatability of the main character. The Growing Up songs help. Structuring the show as a memory play as in the revival also helps.
-
I do miss The Hills of Tomorrow and the music nerdiness of the same tune running through 3 songs worth of evolution, but I've come to terms with the show working much better without it. You couldn't really do it as a memory play with those songs there.
-
Now off to Mauna Kea observatory at 14,000 feet. Of course we came to Hawai'i for the snow!
-
RIP Robert Duvall. I've got some more movies and TV of his to see that I've missed.
-
The Duvall news was not welcome. Here he is doing a tango with his wife.

-
I have been enjoying the audiobook of Never Mind the Happy, Marc Shaiman’s autobiography. It’s perfect as an audiobook because he has songs and more. The printed book has pictures. But the audio is a separate treat.
-
Four!

Robert Duvall.
....hey, Boo.......

My favorite role of his.

Mine was probably Tender Mercies.

We continued our Colombo marathon today. Brenda Vaccaro was memorable.
-
Back to work tomorrow.
-
Is it President's Day?
Or Presidents' Day?
Or Presidents Day?
-
I hope some DR bought a washer or a mattress or a refrigerator in celebration.
-
Good night, friends.
-
And others.
-
Our library was open today. Go figure.
-
Early voting starts tomorrow.

I’ve got a sub deal with fourth grade for tomorrow.

Then three days of election work.

Very interesting seeing that song sung as a duet.
-
Finished Merrily - more in the notes.
-
Was on YouTube prior to that, fell asleep and slept through two Tony Randall Hercule Poirot movies that came up while I was dozing.
-
Test
-
Happy about Applause!
-
Merrily I saw in DC at Kennedy Center, and I only remember loving it.
-
I saw Ann Morrison’s staging of the original Merrily script. The audience hated it, but they were attacking the score, not the script. It was odd.
-
Time for a new page.
-
In one.
-
Five!
-
Good night, all.
-
Tomorrow I shall probably go to the getting place.
-
The Ladies Short Program in ice skating is tomorrow with the long program on Thursday.
-
“Enter Laughing” has never been released on DVD or Blu-Ray.
-
Quincy Jones’s soundtrack for Enter Laughing was only ever released on a Liberty Records LP.
-
I feel like that movie was on TV a lot when I was a kid. Wonder how it and its score slipped into such obscurity.
-
An odd Sondheim-Styne piece after the 49-minute mark.

So, Jeanne never got on. She couldn't figure out how to clear her cache on the iPad and she hasn't been here since we were hacked. I told her to Google it, but apparently she didn't. I just don't understand these things.

New notes are up.
