Well, you've read the notes, the board is under attack, and now it is time for you to post until the under attack cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ENOUGH!
-
Happy Valentine's Day!
-
From the notes: "Today’s topic of discussion: Have we all just about had it with this here site or should we continue having them fix it once and for all?"
It's a surprising question, in that I don't see any indication that anyone who's a regular on the site now has had it with the HHW site. It's a community based in this HHW site being here, and if the HHW site were to go, the HHW community would go. People go away for a while and come back, and drop by when their schedules allow; that couldn't happen at all if the HHW site were gone.
But then, a lot has been discussed about the avatars - I'm genuinely confused about why the avatars appearing and disappearing has anything to do with anyone feeling like part if the community here and certainly not the site continuing. The New York Times comments area basically has no avatars at all, and that's going on. Facebook has the profile photos, but they're so tiny that no one seems to see them as a dealbreaker. [Added this later: see singdaw's post about why the avatars can matter; never thought of that before.]
-
Good morning, all.
-
Last night we were vegging out in front of the tube, watching the NBC highlights (we got Peacock for the duration of the Olympics, but were just in the mood to be spoonfed the goodies last night). I'd been ketchuping on the site fine for a while, but at some point HHW literally dropped off the internet ... and it stayed gone. When I went to bed and eventually gave up my losing battle with Mr. Sandman, it was still toast. Checked first thing this morning, and was glad to see that BK was able to post the notes. I think keeping the historic uninterrupted streak of HHW notes going is a priority in these unsettled times.
-
This is so odd:
On my iPad and iPhone, I now can't log in here using Chrome. I get into a loop of putting in the name and password and watching the password blank out as I hit "submit" ... so it's like HHW never gets the password. (That's a layman's description, who in the HELL knows what is actually happening.) But somehow HHW works with Safari on those two devices, at least this past week, so at least I can get in. This morning, however, on the laptop where I use Safari every day for HHW, it just started doing the same thing. The login never completes. So I went to Chrome on the laptop, and it's working fine. Absolutely the opposite situation. I'm sure this will change yet again before all is said and done, because it's all so random.
-
BK, we all appreciate this board so much. So many friendships have been made here.
The avatars make it easier to see who's posting. But it's not a dealbreaker for me.
My life is so boring I really have nothing to say. And that's not a bad thing, really.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I couldn't post anything at all last night.
-
Even accessing the site was cumbersome.
-
I have 107020 reasons for wanting to continue spending time with y'all.
-
I plan on making this cake this morning.

-
We are having Dimanche Gras tomorrow at church.
Thanks, Google Translate.
-
I'm looking forward to waffles. Then I give up a few things for Lent.
-
1. Carbs. I did so well with that a couple years ago. I need to do it again.
2. Games on my phone. I did that last year. I only reinstalled one of them.
3. One-hour limit per day on Youtube.
-
I also haven't posted on Facebook since Ash Wednesday last year.

We had a waffles flavored oatmeal from Oats Overnight on Thursday. Quite delicious!

With all the talk about "social media" in Congress these days, I feel that actually reading newspapers and magazines like the New York Times or Wall Street Journal or the actual news aspects of Playbill online - are just reading the paper, not using social media in any detrimental way.
I feel similarly about watching actual delayed versions of TV shows like CNN news or comedy shows or movies (TV movies and series too) on YouTube - that it's really not using "social media" in the way Congress is talking about.
Listening to music on YouTube feels like an actual positive, and the same as listening to CDs or downloads - not "social media" in any bad way. When you start getting involved in the user comments section, that feels like it's crossed over into being "social media" where care is needed.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
And others.
-
BK - appreciate you for providing this site and all you do for this community.
-
I haven't posted much lately because I have limited time, and the avatars are a way for me to quickly identify who's posting. Without them, it takes me three times as long to catch up on the board, and when time is limited, I'm less inclined to do so. Nothing against you, BK. That's just my reality.
-
Also, sorely miss the ability to post photos.
-
But the main draw here is the good folks who live here.
-
Indeed DR singdaw.
-
I cannot imagine a day without HHW.
I also understand the frustration of MR BK with what is happening.
And I also wish that those bots & folks behind them would D I E.
-
Other than that Happy Valentine's Day! ;)

What are the other ads? Is it a know-your-viewer-demographic kind of thing?

This is a good explanation of the difficulty without avatars. I am missing so few of them it is easier to read the names inbetween the posts with avatars.

LOL DR FREDDIE - pick up trucks and Wegovy.

DR George, what is your Wordle score?
-
Yesterday was mostly a travel day, with a great lecture on asteroids. By the time we got to our hotel I couldn't access the board at all.
-
Today is our day at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
-
DR MICHAEL G are the scientists sure they were asteroids and not Gammera?

Going to check to see what's going on with the Olympics!

I'm up, I'm up - almost eight hours of sleep.
-
Not feeling it for sandwiches today.
-
I think I need some nice pasta from somewhere. Comfort.
-
Last night was beyond frustrating and it made me lose my sense of humor, so apologies for that. I got such a lovely email from a UK lurker about the Notes - I'll keep those going, of course, but it's the board they have to solve.

If the Notes and the board aren't attached to each other, doesn't that mean the board has no chance to grow at all?

While driving to the gym I told Keith how frustrating this has been for you, plus hand cramping on top of it.
-
Yes, it has been frustrating for us but nothing compared to Bruce who has to deal with it.

I doubt it makes a difference since the board is an easy click away.

That would be nice.

Something is wrong with that orange cake recipe.
-
It said to bake 25-35 minutes at 350. An hour at 350 and the cake still doesn't look done. The butter and sugar at the bottom didn't caramelize. But I will give in a try.

MR Bk no apology necessary.

I watched the Men's Double Luge and now watching some skiiing.

I got my turntable in the computer room hooked up to the Sound Bar I bought when I thought the other one was broken....
It sounds okay.
And the over 20 year old 5.1 surround sound system with two front/two rear/one center speaker and a subwoofer and the 15 miles of wire involved are safely on a shelf in the back closet.

Hopefully, you cake turns out great, John!
-
And a couple of replies to comments from yesterday:
Congrats to Keith's Wordle score!
John, thanks for the Fats Waller video link! I love Ain't Misbehavin'! It's hard to believe that that was almost 50 years ago, but also that the show was created less than 35 years after he died.
-
It will still be at the end of the notes like always - the ability to come right to the board. It's just its own entity on the server - until it's separated they can't complete the updates required to get it on the new server.
-
Had my chicken pasta thing from Stanley's -= very good.
-
Haven't heard from Muse Margaret yet - hope this doesn't turn into a really late thing because then I can't do it.
-
This happens occasionally. I think she thinks it's going to be a long list but it's actually exactly the same number of things as the other list - thirteen - takes ten minutes and done.
-

Dozed off for ninety minutes.
-
Muse Margaret called and we went over everything and did the ones that felt right to us - again, I'd already entered the ones I knew were right - so this was just thirteen things I had questions about.
-
Now you can get to sleep earlier tonight.
-
Vibes the notes can be posted on time!
-
Have you all been watching Paula Poundstone's shorts?
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/f8Cl93IEfIw
-
Nope.
-
It was a quiet Valentine's Day here. We don't really go in for the big gestures.
-
I am actually a bit relieved to hear about the site's issues, I've tried to join a few times recently and coukdnt get here, I thought I had been banned
-
We got up to 55 degrees!
-
Things have continued hectic.
-
But I shall try to be better about checking in.
-
I, also, am curious about the status of DR John G.'s cake.
-
As in, should I bookmark this recipe, or not? :)
-
Enjoying the first day of a 3-day weekend.
-
Monday is President's Day.
-
I hope you allare well
-
Oddly, the sign on the Post Office door says that they are closed on Monday for "Washington's Birthday."
-
I didnt see Elmore posting today...is sll ok there?
-
Hey there, DR vixmom!
-
DR elmore3003 is fine. He is waiting to return to HHW until the avatar situation is fixed.
-
We watched a Columbo today, too, DR Jrand75! We are working our way through the 24 TV movies that aired AFTER the regular series ended.
-
Good night, friends.

PAGE FIVE

We must still be under attack. It often takes many minutes for one click to register.
-
I thought it was my end that I couldn’t get on. Sorry to hear about all your problems
-
I hope you didn't need to take it someplace.
I did. It was okay, but not great.
-
As in, should I bookmark this recipe, or not? :)
Not. I think there are better versions out there. First, you have to caramelize the sugar and butter first. Then, you do have to peel the oranges first. I might add crushed pistachios to the dough.
-
Good to see you, Vixmom. Hope you and the Vixfam are groovy.
-
We made chili tonight for our church’s chili cook-off. I think it turned out very well.
-
And yes, Vixmom, my recipe called for 1 tablespoon sugar.
-
I’m not having a delay in posting now.
-
That’s nice while I blather.
-
We got a good amount of rain today.
-
None in the forecast for the next 10 days.
-
And the low for the next 10 days is 50.
-
The Prince of Grand Street arrived today. Hope to listen tomorrow.
-
Test
-
Cripes! Another two days where it says I don’t have permission to post! I can live without avatars, but it’s tough when I can’t post.
-
Changed browsers and now I’m back in the game.
-
Have you all been watching Paula Poundstone's shorts?
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/f8Cl93IEfIw
I love her vids! :D
-
"And that's what I wanna talk to you about." ;D
-
Back from the show - I stayed because it was a really vocal audience - about twenty-five on this Valentine's Day. I had to give some tough love after - very sloppy and inconsistent tonight and I should not be having to give those kinds of notes five weeks into a run.
-
We had a great time on volcano day. Our guide was a geologist who's been studying this volcano for 30 years and her love and enthusiasm for it was delightful.
-
DR MICHAEL G are the scientists sure they were asteroids and not Gammera?
Yes. :) We learned a lot about current planetary defense efforts in his talk.
-
Page five is better than page three.
-
And so it would follow that page six is better than page four.
-
Tomorrow, I'm ushering for the Washington Center's silent movie series: Love, Luck, and Laughter: A Buster Keaton Double Feature (https://www.washingtoncenter.org/event/silent-movie-love-luck-laughter-buster-keaton-26-2-15/).
-
Guess no late-night denizens tonight.
-
Ah, George has arrived.
-
Must finish writing some damn notes.
-
It's live organ music, and always historically accurate for the movie.
-
One time, they had a cellist provide the movie music which was different but really good.

Have fun! We watched Seven Chances for our last film class and it was hilarious! It starts a little slow as it sets up the situation but stay with it.
