Well, you've read the notes, the notes were covered, and now it is time for you to post until the covered cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: IMBUE!

Topic of the Day: pretty much just riblet patties like McDonald's McRib, otherwise, not a fan of ribs. :P
-
Good morning.
-
TOD: The ones my daughter-in-law makes.
-
I woke up early from some stupid snippets of dreams. Evelyn Nesbit, a lake, and a hotel elevator were present.
-
Good mnorning, all!
-
DR Rodzinski's and Michael G's avatars are back today, but DR Laura is still missing.
-
I slept rather well. No dreams remembered. It's spent much of the time between 3:00 and the alarm at 6 cuddling with the cats and planning my day. I have several things on the agenda: making a chicken stew, writing another number for the ballet, and working on my taxes.
-
TOD: Whenever Skip makes ribs, it always great. But from restaurants, the Chinese spare ribs from Shun Lee near Lincoln Center are particularly good; Virgil's BBQ is almost always reliable; and the Brooklyn Diner (which to clarify is in Manhattan) makes fantastic ribs.
George mentioned the McRib, which I really enjoy (when they have it), especially for not having to fuss with bones. The price on the McRib (when they have it) seems not to be what you might consider fast-food prices, but it's really tasty.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Sn*w.
-
Not that much, a couple of inches, but the worst part is the wind and temperatures we're supposed to have the rest of the day and tomorrow.
From our friends at Accu{sic}Weather:
Today's high will be 2 (count 'em), with wind chill factor -4.
Tomorrow's high, 16, wind chill 3.
On Monday it warms up to 26 degrees. Wind chill 7.
-
Oh n*!

DR GEORGE I think DR JOHN G's post was a Scopitone so movie/tv belly button rules did not apply.

Saint Louis plays today at 3 p.m.

I love ribs, but haven't had any in years. It's not something I usually think about. When I moved here we had a wonderful "roadhouse" that specialized in falling-off-the-bone ribs, and another with an all-around menu but their ribs were just as wonderful. Both of those ceased to exist years ago.
Going back to the late 1970s, my earliest favorite place for ribs was Montgomery Inn in Cincinnati which my parents would take me to on my visits from California. I was in three of their locations (I think DR Ginny will know about all of this): the original one on Montgomery Rd., the one downtown on the river, and the one out east on Beechmont Rd. near I-275. The latter didn't last long, my memory is hazy on that, but I think the Bob Evans that's been there for years is where it was. Mr. Google tells me the original place is "temporarily closed", so I don't know what's up with that or with how they're doing these days.
I've had the dry rub at the place in the alley in downtown Memphis (I always have to look it up): the Rendezvous!
I think any place I've had ribs in the South, they've been great. I probably never had them often enough to start experiencing disappointing ones. And I've always been happy with whatever type of barbecue rub or sauce each place specializes in. So, I'm no expert on ribs, but I like 'em.
EDIT: The above were all pork ribs. I've only had beef ribs a couple of times, and for the life of me I can't think where. But it's been years, so I don't remember how much I liked them. I'd probably love Texas ones, but the times I was in Texas I was stuffing as much BBQ brisket into my pie hole as would fit, and I never got around to trying ribs.
-
I haven't had ribs in maybe 15 years since Karla Burns and I closed the Dallas Barbecue on West 72nd Street one night. I'm not a big red meat eater, so I prefer seafood or chicken.
-
Speaking of chicken, it's time to begin the stew.
-
Dallas BBQ! Thank you, DR Elmore. How could I forget?
Eighth St. at University Place, right? And the one over in the East Village. I ate at both several times. The University Place one was one of the first places my co-worker friends and I ate at when we'd just moved here from L.A. and were exploring the city.
I remember walking past the one up by the Dakota, but was never in there. I so miss those neon signs in the windows.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I love a good rib, beef or pork. But the price of a really good beef rib these days is ridiculous. It’s something like $30 a pound and that includes the bone.
-
Best ribs I have ever had were the beef ribs from Killan’s in Pearland, just south of Houston. I used their amazing espresso sauce on them and had an eye-opening, near-religious experience.
-
That was a day I visited eight barbecue joints in one day. My favorite dish that day was at the end. It was a plate of six ginormous barbecue crabs. I couldn’t believe the flavor. Though not technically barbecue (they were dipped in barbecue seasoning and fried in peanut oil), they were so good, I cleaned all six.
-
I paid for it by eating too much. But I was happy.
-
I need to face the day.
-
But first …

Made a raisin pie, but the raisins looked old. So, I tossed them and used dried cherries, goji berries and golden raisins. The upper crust burned slightly, but it looks good.

And now the avatars of DR Freddie and John G have vanished.

The stew is smelling very good.

Actually, except for DR Jrand75, everyone's avatar, including mine, has disappeared!

Is this to bring somewhere, or to have around the house?
-
TOD: Yes. I'm a barbecue pantheist. But if forced to choose, it would be Texas-style beef brisket. My favorite was at Kreuz Market in Lockhart, Texas. What a revelation to a northerner. That was a long time ago so I don't know if it's still good.
-
Oh yes, sauce. Preferably the meat needs no sauce, just a dry rub. But for saucy styles, anything that balances heat and sweet without either one dominating tends to work well for me. I like Carolina, but the vinegary or mustardy sauces are my least favorite of major American barbecue styles.
-
I'm up, I'm up - maybe six and a half hours of sleep. Up at six for an hour then back to bed until ten.
-
Muse Margaret has weighed in on the covers - she liked three of the twenty but after much thought she narrowed it down to one and it was exactly the one I'd already narrowed it down to. We'll do a couple of things to it - put a bit of red into one part of it, and we don't care for the font for that one, which is cursive and a little hard to read. She chose another font from the ones we had and I'll have to see what that looks like, because in the one that HAS that font, it's straight across. That can't happen in the image we like - it has to be stacked. If that doesn't look good, then I'll have Doug come up with a few alternatives, maybe a couple of which we haven't seen.
-

It’s been 15 years for me. Wow. But Kreuz was really good then.

This pie is also known as funeral pie, because you can make it quickly with ingredients you are likely to have on hand: raisins, water, brown sugar, vinegar, butter, salt and cinnamon, plus your dough ingredients.

Thanks for recommending the John Boyne book, DR John G.

DR Jane, did you ever tell us how the artichokes came out?
I don't think so. I could have cooked it a bit longer, otherwise it was good. I used plastic wrap to cover the bowl and had to replace it once as I was concerned it was melting.

Speaking of the Olympics, I thought this was interesting:
Curling stones are specialized 38–44 lb (average 42 lb) granite rocks, exclusively sourced from Ailsa Craig, Scotland, or Trefor, Wales, known for low water absorption to prevent freezing damage. Used in sets of 16 (8 red, 8 yellow handles), they cost over $600 each or ~$9,600 per set. With proper maintenance—refurbishing the running band every 5–10 years—they can last for decades.
-
Thanks for posting that raisin pie recipe, DR ChasSmith.

Skip watched anther episode of STRANGER THINGS, and he's close to the end of season 3 now.
We then watched an episode of LINCOLN LAWYER; we're still feeling no impulse to binge-watch it this year, though we're enjoying it a great deal. It may be a mix of no compulsion to get to the end of the plot in the ten episodes, and at the same time wanting to draw out watching it this time.
Also, I enjoy HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU the news comedy show on CNN Sat. 9 pm, which was starting in a half hour when we finished LINCOLN LAWYER.
