Title: REAL RAIN
Post by: bk on November 21, 2025, 12:18:35 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of real rain, pelting rain, pouring rain, and now it is time for you to post until the rainy cows come home.

Today, I need to go to my sister's and help put up a new tarp over my niece's chicken shelter.  The current one is starting to shred more and it lets in too much water when it rains, so it has to be replaced.  It's not difficult, just awkward. :P

I'm happy to hear my friend Bryce is in Chess since he and Scarlett have a baby to keep in baby things. Hs wife Scarlett is the Liza Doolittle on the John Wilson recording of My Fair Lady. DR Ginny and I saw them both in A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder.

When we were hoping to record Jubilee in 1921, I had cast Bryce and Scarlett as Eric Dare and Karen O'Kane. I'm afraid that's my last chance to record the score.

Today, after the Amazon Fresh order is unpacked, kitty cleanup is finished, and I've picked up the mail, I will make a huge vat of pasta sauce. I don't have any plans beyond that.

From a Minnesota post on Facebook:
My parents recently noticed four stray cats showing up in their garden. They were thin, cautious, and always together — like a little family trying to survive the Minnesota winter. ❄️

My dad couldn’t stand seeing them out in the cold, so he decided to build something special — a tiny cat “condo” tucked right by the trees. It’s insulated, lined with straw, and fitted with gentle heat lamps to keep them warm through the freezing nights. Inside are cozy blankets and little shelves where they can curl up safely.

He even built a small raised platform to hold food and water — high enough to keep raccoons and other animals from getting to it. And, because he couldn’t help himself, he added a birdhouse nearby “for entertainment,” as he put it.

Now, every night, you can see the glow of the warm shelter from the window — and inside, four content cats curled up together, finally safe. ❤️

It’s amazing what a bit of compassion can do. Sometimes love doesn’t need words — just a little shelter, a warm light, and a heart that cares.

MichaelG, what's your impression on the issue of whether it's closer to an Encores presentation than a typical Broadway-size musical?

A follow up to that could be:  Could this be a budget-aware way of producing in this era where new $25-million musicals just aren't paying their investments back despite big grosses?

I thought the staging, sets and costumes were fine. It's nothing like the Encores show I saw. I think there are still some folks who can't deal with abstracted sets and want realism everywhere, like in a movie. It didn't look particularly low budget either.
Title: Re: REAL RAIN
Post by: MichaelG on November 21, 2025, 05:35:31 AM
Of course the sets are nowhere near as elaborate as The Queen of Versailles. But they filled the stage a lot better than Ragtime, where what few sets there were looked exactly like the Encores transfer it is.

By the way, it’s not a soundtrack exactly, but the Disneyland Records “Songs About Winnie the Pooh and Tigger,” produced/arranged by Camarata and featuring Sterling Holloway and Louis Prima and a gorgeous choir. That’s one great recording. Pull that off your shelf sometime and put it on your turntable.

Last night DR Rodzinski said:

I’ve been listening to the Do Re Mi original cast recording on RCA with its nifty die-cut sleeve.

I've always been a sucker for those die-cut sleeves and other RCA deluxe packaging such as the Soria Series. (They did a few of the Soria single disc releases in the extra heavy cardboard but without die-cuts, I think). Other die-cuts included an album or two of Dick Schory "exotica" or percussion music. In later years, the first issues of their ".5" half-speed-mastered series were die-cuts, as was Merrily We Roll Along. (If I'm remembering these right, being too lazy to look them up!)

Yes, there was a Stereo Action! box you’ll find in bits and pieces at thrift stores across this great land, rarely intact.

As someone with too many records and an abundance of curiosity, there’s not a lot that I completely resisted in the world of LPs, but box sets were just too unwieldy for me, and I’ve never kept company with them. The exception being a Reader’s Digest Guy Lombardo  six-record set that hits me just right.

Coming from a classical background, box sets were second nature to me, what with operas, symphonic sets, and all.

At one point I was enamored enough of the RCA-produced Readers Digest sets that I accumulated about a dozen of what I determined were the choicest ones for my taste. I later found that many of those weren't all that interesting to me and I began letting them go. The classical ones in particular were, with a couple of exceptions, not the greatest of performances, as lovely as the sets and pressings were. I still have just a few of the RD sets now, but what a great collection of music they put out overall. I do not fault them in the least.

Here’s a die-cut cover I kept because I found a copy still in shrink and it looks like it could’ve been printed yesterday. Laura, die-cut just means the covers had a cut out so you could see through to the gatefold or the inner sleeve. In this case all those circles are cut outs, the colorful parts are on the inner sleeve.

Note the other release of this record was a completely different die-cut on the Premier series which featured a lot of cool cover designs.

There was a Readers Digest set of operettas that was particularly good which I believe I still have. DR Elmore knows about this one. If I'm remembering right, it was released outside of the U.S. with an additional disc which I only have digitally.

I have the entire Readers Digest set, including the two extra discs of four operettas, on mp3 files. There are some wonderful performances and the great Broadway conductor Lehman Engel does a fantastic job.

My neighbor the G&S fan, who unfortunately had a stroke and had to move into a care facility, had that set. I put together a playlist of G&S music and other stuff he liked like the Comedian Harmonists, but it didn’t seem to do anything positive for him.

Lost Horizon on Bell Records, home of the Partridge Family. Definitely a gatefold but I don’t think it was die-cut.

I couldn’t find my copy but there was some weird element like the front cover gatefold was like a split door, where you could open just the top or bottom half.

Of course the sets are nowhere near as elaborate as The Queen of Versailles. But they filled the stage a lot better than Ragtime, where what few sets there were looked exactly like the Encores transfer it is.

That's too bad for Ragtime.

Last night DR Rodzinski said:
Quote

Yes, Merrily was a half-speed master:

Here’s a die-cut cover I kept because I found a copy still in shrink and it looks like it could’ve been printed yesterday. Laura, die-cut just means the covers had a cut out so you could see through to the gatefold or the inner sleeve. In this case all those circles are cut outs, the colorful parts are on the inner sleeve.

Note the other release of this record was a completely different die-cut on the Premier series which featured a lot of cool cover designs.

Very cool, Rodzinski.

Had a Jersey Mike's Philly - pretty good. That was noon. This is now - just ordered a chicken breast from California Chicken Cafe for now - and a little side of chicken pasta salad for later.

I love the Jersey Mike's Philly!

I love the Jersey Mike's Club Sub with pickles added!

Dancing went fairly well. My partners were great. In the Viennese waltz routine, though, we got to the very last step and my back starts to let me know it’s not happy. And it wasn’t an easy step.

At least, you got fo the end!
